Industrial Hemp has many applications when it comes to building materials and construction.
We are excited to be on our way to providing these products for builders, customers, and developers hopefully by the end of this year (2023)
About Industrial Hemp :
This segment of the industry has shown tremendous potential in recent years however as with any emerging field, it takes time to build the infrastructure and create products the right way.
Thankfully Fiber hemp grows well here in Virginia. It is versatile, fast growing, and sustainable compared with traditional building materials such as wood, steel, and concrete.
Fiber hemp can be grown in one season (April - October) and processed into hemp hurd, the woody core of fiber hemp stalks. The hurd material (also called shives) can also be used to make products such as insulation, flooring, wall panels, animal bedding, and hempcrete for building.
Fiber hemp is a renewable resource that will grow readily in a variety of climates and conditions found here on the east coast. Additionally the plant absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere making it a "carbon negative" material.
The strong, flexible fibers of the hemp plant are naturally resistant to pests, mold, and mildew, making them a well suited choice for many construction applications.
Virginia Tech has been researching the use of fiber hemp in the construction of affordable housing and researchers have found that fiber hemp can be used to create lightweight, energy-efficient materials that are suitable many housing projects.
